Your first dance as married couple is a moment you’ll cherish forever, and with a little planning, you can make it extraordinary. Lots of couples are nervous about their first dance but with this guide, you’ll be able to enjoy your first dance worry free.

1.     The Perfect Song

Choose a meaningful song that resonates with both of you. If you’re struggling to choose, pick a song that makes you feel the way you want to during your first dance. Maybe you want a joyful song to represent your excitement or a love song for a romantic feel. Pick whichever suits you and your partner.

2.     Length of The Song

I advise that a first dance is roundabout 2-3 minutes long, which for most couples is plenty of time to savour the moment whilst being able to engage their guests. Do not worry if your song is longer than this as your DJ will be able to shorten it if you wish.

3.     Practice Some Moves

Learn a few basic moves like holds, dips, twirls and for the adventurous, lifts. Online resources on YouTube are plentiful so turn it into a fun date night, where you can giggle at trying something new. Trust me, if I can do it with my two left feet, so can you.

4.     Consider Your Attire

Think about your wedding attire and how different movements will look and feel. Movement and the range of motion will be very different in different dresses and shoes and don’t hesitate to take off tightly fitted jackets for more freedom of movement. Comfort is key to enjoying your first dance.

5.     Timing Matters

Consider when you would like your first dance. Do you prefer dancing straight after you enter the reception venue? Would you prefer to cut the cake first? Or would you prefer an announcement later in the evening?

6.     Space and Guest Placement

Consider the size of the space and determine how much room you have to dance. Also consider where you want your guests to be. They could all stand to the side to allow you more room or stand around the dancefloor and feel a part of the first dance. Alternatively, you may decide you would like to share a private first dance with your partner, for the most romantic and intimate feel.

7.     Post-Dance Plans

Think about what will happen immediately after your first dance. Would you like people to be invited to join you? Would you want to have parent-child dances? Decide on the mood you want to create. If you want the party to really get started, have a drop and an upbeat dance song. If you want to savour the romanticism, have a dance inviting all the couples to join you.

8.     Eye Contact is Key

Remember, during the dance, to look into each other’s eyes. It not only enhances a romantic atmosphere but will make you both look more confident and translate into some stunning images.

9.     Relax and Savour the Moment

Take a deep breath, relax, and really bask in the moment. This is a special moment, so relish in the connection you and your partner share. Do not worry about anything else while you’re there.
